Create an age-appropriate activity bag for each little guest on your list. If you aren’t sure what the kids would like, ask their parents. Here are some ideas.
a packet of crayons and a coloring book
a word search or activity book for kids old enough to read
a small puzzle
small packets of snacks or candy (ask parents first)
light up bracelets or glow sticks
Get kids involved.
Kids who feel like part of the action will be less likely to get bored and out of control. Ask your DJ to encourage children to dance and include them in the fun.
You can also give kids tasks like passing out wedding favors or asking guests to sign a special card or other items.
Buy some disposable cameras and ask children to take lots of pictures for you so you don’t miss anything.
Offer kid food.
Hungry kids are badly behaved kids. Make sure your food offerings include something kids will eat. While the adults enjoy steak or fish, give little ones a choice of chicken fingers or mac and cheese.
Have someone run interference.
It’s your wedding day, and you shouldn’t have to spend it keeping kids under control. You can’t expect kids to act like tiny adults, but you can expect them to refrain from running through the crowd, throwing food or destroying your decor.
Before the wedding, enlist someone to keep an eye on the children and speak to their parents if they get out of control. For example, you might ask your mother to keep an eye on your high energy nephews while their mom, your sister, is busy as Matron of Honor.
Hire a sitter.
If you’re expecting a small crowd of kids at your wedding, it makes sense to hire someone to keep track of them.
Call a babysitting service and hire an experienced professional to watch the kids in the church nursery during the ceremony. During the reception, a babysitter can entertain the kids with a movie and activities in another room of the hotel or reception hall.
You could also offer to hire a babysitter to watch children in their parents’ hotel room while they enjoy the wedding.
Weddings are a family affair, and many people like to include children. If you want kids at your wedding, take some steps to be sure that they are taken care of and happy throughout the night. They will have more fun, and so will their parents.
